Rationale

A needs assessment was conducted and the findings informed the need for curriculum review. Gaps were identified in line with little exposure to practical learning, exposure to technology use in teaching and extension as well as limited competencies in solving agri-related problems. Stakeholders involved, especially the students and Alumni indicated the need to provide more ICT resources and practical teaching. The KICD emphasised on the changes in CBET hence the need to align the curriculum. The TSC also expects graduates who can teach the subject areas in CBE hence this review is critical in ensuring competent teachers and extension agents are released into the labour market.

Agriculture contributes about 33 percent of Kenya’s gross GDP and employs 40 percent of the total population and 70 percent of the rural population. The current agriculture food systems are complex and dynamic. They require well trained and skilled manpower. This justifies investment in capacity building in agricultural education at basic education and tertiary levels. The Bachelor of Science Agricultural Education and Extension degree programme prepares agriculture and Biology trainers, as well as essential manpower for agricultural extension and sustainable rural development. The graduates are also sufficiently equipped with knowledge, skills and values to promote and/or engage in technological innovations in the areas of agri-preneurship, nutrition-sensitive agriculture and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Programme Objective

The primary aim of this programme is to prepare graduates with appropriate professional knowledge, competencies, attitudes and values to teach agriculture and biology, and effectively engage in agricultural extension and rural development programmes.

Admissions

Candidates must have passed K.C.S.E. or its equivalent with a minimum mean grade C+ in accordance with Egerton University rules and regulations for admission into undergraduate studies as stipulated in Egerton University Statute 37(2)(c).

In addition, a candidate must have passed KCSE or an equivalent examination in the following subjects at minimum grades as indicated:

  • English: C (Plain)
  • Mathematics: C (Plain)
  • Biology: C+
  • Agriculture/Chemistry: C+

Alternative Pathways: OR A holder of a diploma with credit or above in Agricultural Education or related field from a college or university recognized by Egerton University. A holder of a diploma with a pass must have at least two years’ work experience in a relevant field to qualify for admission.

Course Requirements

These should include all requirements of the programme such as:

a) Obligations of the student

  • i) Class attendance
  • ii) Attachment/practicum/internship (two Teaching Practices and one Field Attachment);
  • iii) Community service;(Primary schools, farmer groups, secondary schools and farms.
  • iv) Participation in interactive and collaborative activities;
  • v) Participation in orientation
  • vi) Submission of assignments
  • vii) Sit for all Continuous Assessment Tests and Tasks and Examinations

b) Obligations of the lecturer

  • i) Course set up, preparation of course content and delivery, and facilitation;
  • ii) Assessment and provision of feedback;
  • iii) Instructor presence beyond the class interaction hours;
  • iv) Online interaction with students (where applicable);
  • v) Monitoring students’ progress and provision of guidance and support where necessary; and
  • vi) Attention to diverse needs of students (provision for individual differences).

c) Obligations of the Institution

  • i) Where applicable and based on the mode of delivery, the institution shall outline the obligations of the institution on the following:
  • ii) Provision of information resources and appropriate technologies, such as Learning Management System (LMS), computers and internet, and the technical support to use it
  • iii) Provide appropriate digital learning materials and resources
  • iv) Provision of a safe learning environment, Data protection, intellectual property rights and copyright, and academic integrity of online courses
  • v) Provision of guidelines for communication between student and lecturer

Regulations & Graduation

Grading System: The grading system shall be as per the guidelines in Statutes 37(8) of Egerton University.

Examination Regulations: Examination regulations stipulated in Egerton University Statutes 37(7) shall apply. The examination schedule for all courses shall be provided for every teaching session by the Directorate of Examinations and Timetabling at the beginning of each semester.

Moderation of examinations: Examinations shall be moderated as per Egerton University Statute 37(7).

Graduation Requirements: To graduate, a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the four academic years. This shall include two field attachment sessions of 8 weeks and 12 weeks; and two teaching practice sessions of 12 weeks each. The total credit factors for the bachelors’ degree in Agricultural Education and Extension is 246.5
